Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your product read, understood, and recommended by AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. If you are new to the idea, start with what GEO means for a SaaS company.
The tool market grew fast, and most vendors describe themselves the same way. The useful way to compare them is by the job they do. Most teams need two of these jobs covered, not all of them.
Vendor details below were checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026. Features and pricing change often, so confirm before you buy.
The jobs GEO tools do
| Job | The question it answers | Tools that do it |
|---|---|---|
| Citation tracking | Where do AI answers mention my brand, and how is that trending? | Otterly.AI, SE Ranking AI Search Toolkit, Limy |
| Site readiness audit | Can AI crawlers read my pages and understand my product? | Free LLM SEO checkers, SEO suites |
| PR and listicle placement | How do I get into the "best tools" roundups AI engines cite? | Sightivo |
| Community GEO | Which public threads should I join to earn genuine recommendations? | Needle |

Citation tracking
These tools run a set of prompts against AI engines on a schedule and record when your brand, and your competitors, show up.
Otterly.AI
Otterly.AI monitors how brands, products, and websites appear in AI-generated answers, including mentions, citations, and competitor visibility. Its site lists tracking for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude.
- Best for: small and mid-size teams that want tracking without a sales call.
- Try it: free trial; paid plans were listed from $29/month as of October 2026.
SE Ranking AI Search Toolkit
SE Ranking added AI search tracking to its existing SEO platform. It tracks brand mentions and links in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and compares you with up to five competitors.
- Best for: teams and agencies already doing SEO reporting in SE Ranking, so GEO data sits next to rankings.
- Try it: 14-day free trial with no card, plus a limited free checker.
Limy
Limy shows marketers how AI agents find and recommend their brand, how they compare with competitors, and connects AI-driven traffic to pipeline and revenue.
- Best for: larger marketing teams that need to report AI visibility in revenue terms.
- Try it: demo request; no self-serve trial was listed.
Choose a tracking tool when you already have the technical basics in place and need trend data across engines. If you only need a monthly snapshot, a fixed prompt list and a spreadsheet work too. Our AI citation share of voice routine shows how.
PR and listicle placement
Sightivo
AI answers often cite third-party "best tools" articles. Sightivo focuses on that layer: it finds the roundups and authors worth pitching in your category and helps draft outreach to get included.
- Best for: crowded categories where shortlists are decided by a handful of roundups.
- Not for: fixing your own site or finding buyer conversations.
We compare the two approaches in Needle vs Sightivo.
Community GEO
Needle
AI engines draw heavily on public community discussions, such as Reddit threads, Hacker News comments, and Stack Overflow answers, when deciding which tools to recommend. Needle searches those communities, ranks threads by buying intent, and shows you the conversations where people are asking for a tool like yours.
- Best for: B2B SaaS and devtools founders who want genuine recommendations, plus the leads that come with them.
- Also free: the LLM SEO checker for site readiness and Trending Problems for category phrasing.
- Pricing: paid plans from $15/month, with a 7-day free trial and no card.
- Honest limits: Needle does not track citations across AI engines (use a tracking tool for that) and does not pitch editors (that is PR work).
The full playbook is in how to get cited by ChatGPT without paying for GEO.
Site readiness: the free layer to run first
Before paying for any GEO tool, check that AI crawlers can read your site. Most problems start here. In our LLM SEO check of 188 SaaS homepages, 26% shipped no structured data in their server HTML and only 3% passed every check.
- LLM SEO checker: llms.txt, AI crawler rules in robots.txt, JSON-LD, and server-rendered HTML
- Google indexing checker: robots.txt and sitemap alignment
- Startup site health checklist: the wider technical audit
Best GEO tool by situation
For SMBs and early-stage SaaS. Start with the free checker and fix critical issues. Then add one self-serve tracking tool with a trial, such as Otterly.AI or SE Ranking. Run Needle alongside if your buyers discuss tools on Reddit, Hacker News, or developer forums.
For agencies. If you already report SEO to clients in SE Ranking, its AI Search Toolkit keeps GEO in the same workflow. Pair it with a PR or listicle process for clients in crowded categories.
For ecommerce. None of the tools above is built specifically for online stores. The parts that matter most are product structured data in your server HTML and tracking in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which both Otterly.AI and SE Ranking cover.
For devtools and APIs. Prioritize a clean llms.txt and documentation in plain HTML, then community GEO. Developer tools led llms.txt adoption in our study at 75%.
For larger marketing teams. A platform that ties AI visibility to pipeline, such as Limy, makes it easier to justify the spend internally.
| Situation | Suggested stack |
|---|---|
| Bootstrapped, pre-revenue | Free checker + manual prompt tracking + Trending Problems |
| Early revenue, want visibility data | Otterly.AI or SE Ranking + Needle for community threads |
| Crowded category, need roundups | Sightivo or similar PR + a tracking tool |
| Devtool or API | llms.txt and docs work + community GEO with Needle |
| Agency | SE Ranking AI Search Toolkit + PR process |
What to look for before you buy
- Which engines it tracks. At minimum ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
- Prompt control. You should choose the prompts, written the way your buyers ask.
- Source visibility. Knowing which pages an answer cited matters more than a single score.
- Competitor view. Being absent is less useful information than knowing who appears instead.
- A trial. Self-serve trials let you check whether the data matches what you see by hand.
The red flag rule
Any vendor promising guaranteed ChatGPT rankings or citations is selling certainty no one has. Models, retrieval, and policies change. The durable approach is unglamorous: a site AI crawlers can read, accurate product information, and real people recommending you in public. Our quarterly AI visibility audit turns that into a routine.
