How to Write Positioning from Real Phrases (Not Generic AI Copy)

Generic AI copy averages the internet. Buyers remember specific failures - "replay failed," "Datadog bill shock," "Notion sync ate my edits." Your homepage should sound like their sentence, not a model's.

Quick answer

Collect 30–50 verbatim lines with constraints → cluster into 3–5 jobs → write one headline per cluster → verify with a customer or lost-deal note. If the original poster would not nod, revise.

Best for: early B2B SaaS replacing vague "AI-powered transform" pages.

Pipeline: collect → cluster → claim → verify

1. Collect (spreadsheet columns)

Column Example
Quote "We can't audit who changed what in prod"
URL + date reddit.com/... 2026-06-01
Constraint 50-person fintech, SOC2
Verb audit, prove, export

Sources: Reddit, HN, Stack Overflow, GitHub issues, sales call notes (with permission). Trending Problems helps pick which clusters to hunt first.

2. Cluster (3–5 jobs max)

Label groups by job, not feature:

  • Migrate - "moving off X"
  • Observe - "see why p99 spiked"
  • Govern - "audit trail for compliance"

Drop clusters with fewer than 5 lines unless ICP is ultra-niche.

3. Claim (headline formula)

For each cluster write:

[Who] + [constraint] + [outcome using their verb]

Bad: "Next-gen observability platform"
Good: "Audit-ready change history for teams leaving spreadsheet runbooks"

4. Verify

Ask one paying user or recent lost deal: "Would this headline describe your week?"
Run landing page conversion checks after ship.

Phrase → headline worksheet

Verbatim phrase (paraphrased) Constraint Headline draft
"Stripe webhook retries are a black box" 10-person SaaS "See every webhook retry without digging through logs"
"HIPAA means we can't use random Slack exports" Healthcare admin "Compliance-safe export for support threads"

Keep the verb from the phrase when accurate.

Redaction and ethics

  • Remove names, employer hints, ticket IDs unless permitted.
  • Do not scrape DMs or private subs for marketing copy.
  • For GDPR context on personal data (not legal advice): gdpr.eu overview.
  • Follow Reddit compliance checklist when collecting from communities.

Why generic AI copy fails

LLMs smooth language into meanings nobody uses in anger. Urgent buyers write with constraints and stakes. Mirror constraints; do not invent them.

Research workflow

  1. Search 3 phrase families (alternatives mining).
  2. Export or copy 10 lines per family.
  3. Cluster Friday; rewrite hero Monday.

Search documentation helps when you repeat the same queries weekly across platforms.
